Contrada Feudo di Mezzo is very vast. Frank prefers to separate the bottom part (sottana) from the upper part (Porcaria cru). FM is produced from sottana Nerello Mascalese. Although lower in the valley floor, the wine is of an unusual elegance, which characterizes this area. Relatively deep soil which, in humid vintages can create some problems although the well ventilated site helps to gain fruit ripeness. Burgundian elegance and roundness, even in hot vintages, makes this a special wine with finesse.

Average Age of Vines: 40+ years

Appellation Notes: Some of Frank's vineyards are too high in elevation for the Etna DOP, so he uses the Terre Siciliane IGT for the sake of uniformity.

Winemaking Notes: Grapes were destemmed and lightly crushed before a 60-day skin fermentation with wild yeast in neutral epoxy tanks. Wine was not fined. It was filtered before bottling with cartridges of 5 micron. No sulfites were added.

Tasting Notes: In the glass, the 2016 FM is an intense shade of ruby red. On the nose, rustic notes of dark berries, crushed stone and dried flowers. On the palate, balanced minerality and acid give way to an elegant wine with a long, supple finish.

    Rating: 91 (9/1/2018)

The 2016 'MunJebel FM' comes from the contrada Feudo di Mezzo, which was split by owner Frank Cornelissen into upper and lower sections. This is from sottana, which is the lower part, closer to the valley floor. A 100% Nerello Mascalese from 40+ year old vines, this has beautiful aromas of wild cherry, blackberry, crushed stone, cured meat and dried flowers which all develop in the glass. A elegant red, with firm tannins and a long supple finish that leaves you wanting more. Although this is already appealing, I expect this will likey show its best stuff after some short term cellaring.

The 2016 Munjebel Rosso FM Feudo di Mezzo Sottana is another direct, steady and focused interpretation in this exciting lineup of new releases. This wine shows more fleshiness and volume with aromas of black fruit and tar, framed by smoked bacon and savory tobacco. You also get transparent varietal typicity with subtle notes of black olive, licorice and aniseed.
