About this Wine: The H. Mynors brand name is a reference to Sean Minor 's 9th great-grandfather. The original spelling of the last name was changed to Minor upon arrival to America. The timing was coincidental to the establishment of vinifera grapevines on the West Coast. What better way to tie Sean's family history to the development of wine production in California than the Zinfandel variety, a grape that has a long California history.
Until recently, Zinfandel was California's "mystery grape" because its origins were unknown. DNA fingerprinting has confirmed that Italy's Primitivo and Crljenak Kastelanski, an ancient Croatian variety, are genetically identical to Zinfandel with slight differences in vine vigor and cluster. Differences in cultivation, terroir, and winemaking combine to give Zinfandel its own particular flavor profile with a truly American name, history, and style.
Winemaking Notes: This unique Zinfandel blend is from sites in Sonoma Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Lodi. The grapes were harvested at optimal maturity, destemmed, and gently crushed into stainless steel fermenters at warm temperatures to fully extract color and flavor. The fermented wine was racked to French oak for aging of which 10% was new. The wine lots were tasted throughout the aging process and blended together just before bottling.
Tasting Notes: This Zinfandel is deep ruby in color and displays aromas of cranberry, violet, brown sugar and vanilla. It is rich and spicy offering flavors of cranberry, black pepper, and bright red fruit that integrate with oak spices. The round, soft tannins, and sweet oak balance lead to a long and lingering finish.
