Vineyard Notes: The Brueske Vineyard is planted in shallow Wright loam soils. The Wright loam series consist of soils formed in alluvium from mixed rock sources. Pinot noir thrives on clay soils. Combined with the coastal influence of the San Francisco bay, the Carneros AVA is one of the most sought after regions for cool climate Pinot noir in California. Wally Brueske has been farming his vineyard organically since he planted it in the late 1990s. In addition to farming grapes, he also distills essential oils from herbs he grows on his property, including rosehips, lavender, mint, tea tree and sage, to name a few.
Winemaking Notes: 50% of the Pinot Noir clusters were destemmed and the remaining 50% of clusters were gently placed inside of the fermentation tank. The must was gently punched down, to minimize extraction, once a day throughout the fourteen day primary fermentation. No sulfur was added to the wine at any stage of the winemaking process. Both the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations were completed using 100% indigenous yeast and bacteria. Aged for 12 months in neutral French oak, the wine was bottled in August of 2018 and allowed to age for an additional 8 months in bottle prior to its release.
Tasting Notes: This wine has all the classic trappings of California Pinot noir with hints of forest floor and bright red fruit, but the garrigue of Wally’s property brings a high-toned energy to the wine that transports you to this idyllic Californian scene.
