te Pā (our place, our home) is owned and operated by the MacDonald family, who can trace their family’s occupation of land at the historically important Wairau Bar to the earliest known settlement by Maori, 800 hundred years ago. This means that the Wairau Bar terroir is truly in their blood. Formed where the Wairau River meets the Pacific Ocean, the Wairau Bar combines rich topsoil with free-flowing alluvial gravel deposits. In 2003, current generation Haysley MacDonald planted Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir vines on the family’s land and thus began the family’s journey into winemaking. It should be noted that Haysley has lived there all his life - just like his parents and grandparents before him, and just like his own four children. The property now has 150 hectares of vines, and the land is worked in an organic fashion.
Winemaker Liam McElhinney: A Blenheim native, and a long-time school friend of Haysley’s, Liam has been in the wine and liquor industry since he was 19 years old. With international winemaking experience, including time spent working in the Rhone Valley, Burgundy and Alsace in France, as well as consulting roles throughout California, Washington State and Canada, Liam has been the winemaker for every vintage of te Pā since the first release in 2011.
