2014 Vintage: After a very cold, very dry winter, Paso Robles was doused with just enough rain in March, to get the cover crop growing in the vineyard only to be quickly knocked down to prepare for a hot dry summer. Summer started early with consistently high temperatures that persisted through harvest. The last grapes were picked early October, almost a month earlier than normal. Bright acidity and concentration will be the hallmarks of this vintage.

Vinification: After a careful cluster sort, the grapes were fermented 100% whole cluster. After a 3-day cold soak with daily pigeage, the clusters were nurtured through native yeast fermentation with daily pumpovers. The Grenache was aged in 2/3 concrete and the remainder, neutral puncheons.

Tasting Notes: This wine is a juicy blend of Denner Vineyard Grenache and Luna Matta Vineyard Grenache fermented 100% whole cluster and aged in concrete vessels and French puncheons. Luna Matta Grenache brings all kinds of wild flora and dark fruits to perfectly complement the bright red fruits, verve, and mineral that is a staple in Denner Grenache. The heady, sexy aromatics of black cherry, canela, dove weed and truffle transition to a generous palate of red fruits, brown sugar, toasted pepitas and spice.

    Rating: 93 (9/1/2016)

(made entirely with whole clusters) Brilliant magenta. Intensely perfumed, spice-accented aromas of ripe red berries, dark chocolate and incense become livelier with aeration. Palate-staining red and blue fruit flavors are complemented by an exotic floral pastille quality that builds on the back half. Rich but bright and energetic, showing superb finishing clarity on the impressively long, gently tannic finish.

    Rating: 91+ (7/8/2016)

A year in, year out release that always delivers the goods, the 2014 Garnacha (100% Grenache) offers classic notes of lavender, violets, black cherries and kirsch to go with a medium-bodied, supple, savory and tannic feel on the palate. Fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged mostly in concrete (one-third was in 500-liter puncheons), give this elegant, classy 2014 a year and enjoy bottles through 2024.
