Tasting Notes: This 2017 Ex Umbris Syrah shows deep purple hues in the glass and mouthwatering aromas of candied plum and fresh raspberry. The slight slate and vanilla notes are interlaced with juicy flavors of blackberry jam, Bing cherry compote and subtle hints of cocoa nib. This is a deliciously full-bodied, yet elegantly structured Syrah that is enjoyable now. For cellaring time, we suggest drinking now through 2025.

About the Wine: This wine was introduced as a one-time bottling in 2002 after a wild fire struck the vineyard’s surrounding hillsides. The residual ash and smoke resonated in the Syrah grapes, creating a very memorable wine. Year after year, Owen Roe has produced a Syrah to keep the story alive. Enjoy this bold Syrah comprised from several exceptional vineyards in the Yakima Valleys

  • Vinous
    Rating: 89 (12/3/2020)

Black cherry, dark raspberry, blueberry, mocha, pepper and dark chocolate on the nose. Juicy, high-pitched and penetrating, with refreshing pepper and herbal lift to its fine-grained red and darker berry flavors. Savory as much as sweet, displaying lovely energy and juiciness. Finishes with dusty but even tannins and very good rising floral length. A seamless, lively, brisk wine with no rough edges. This perennial top value is delicious today.

    Rating: 92 (7/12/2021)

Dried violets, cherries, blueberries, smoked meat and cracked pepper on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Supple and subtly smoky.
