Vineyard Notes: Barra Vineyard is a truly unique site nestled in the Redwood Valley of Mendocino County. It is just north of Ukiah. The roots of these 46-year-old Chardonnay vines dig deeply into the soils in which they are planted. The red soils of Redwood Valley, a cooler climate compared to surrounding regions, make this an ideal region for growing white grape varieties. Highly deficient in organic matter, the moderately acidic soil pH allows for optimal nutrient uptake to allow the vines to thrive. The same family has owned and farmed Barra Vineyard for generations. The Barra family was farming their vineyards organically before the term even existed!
Vinification Notes: The Chardonnay was entirely harvested by hand. Whole clusters were pressed and allowed to ferment using only indigenous yeast and bacteria. No sulfites were added to the wine at any time during the fermentation, aging, or bottling period. The wine fermented in neutral French oak barrels and aged sur lie . There were no further additions to the wine prior to its gentle bottling via gravity in May of 2019. Fermented in 100% neutral French oak, this bright, food friendly Chardonnay showcases the unique terroir of Redwood Valley.
