Overview: When wine enthusiasts describe the great blends of the world, the conversation often starts in Bordeaux. The notion of combining different grape varieties in order to make the sum greater than its parts began with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The winemakers at Les Lunes love the classic style of Merlot and Cabernet on which California built its reputation. Finding and farming a beautiful hillside site in the cool region of Carneros resulted in an elegant and restrained style of red wine built to be great for years to come.

Soils: Coplan Vineyard is planted in shallow Wright loam soils. The Wright loam series consist of poorly drained soils formed in alluvium from mixed rock sources. Merlot and Cabernet are grapes that thrive on clay soils. Combine the soils with the cool climate of Carneros, and you have a classic California red for the ages!

Farming: Les Lunes leases, manages and performs all aspects of farming at both vineyard sites. Everything is 100% organic; neither herbicides nor insecticides are used and all sprays are timed in relation to the moon. The vineyard is currently in transition to dry farming. During this transition, the vines are watered two or three times a year depending on vintage conditions. Compost and cover crops are used to increase organic material in the soils.

Vinification: Fermented separately, whole clusters were destemmed and punched down once a day for the fourteen day primary fermentation. No sulfites were added to the wine until it had completed both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations. It was blended and aged for two years in neutral Bordeaux barrels. Bottled in August 2018, the wine has aged for an additional 12 months in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes: This is a straight up old school CA wine, meaning bright fruit, layered spice, a hint of earthiness and acid to pull everything through. Drink now, but be sure to lay down a bottle or two in your cellar as this wine is built to last.
