About the Isabella Grape: Isabella a Proibida is the lone red bottling from António Maçanita’s Azores Wine Company project. Before phylloxera hit in the late 19th century, the Azores islands were one of the most prolific growing areas in Europe with the volume of production in the millions of liters. Following phylloxera, that production level was decimated to less than 25,000 liters. As a stopgap, Isabella was planted. Isabella is a hybrid of Vitis Vinifera and Vitis Labrusca (related to the “fox grapes” of the American South). it is very resistant to phylloxera, and became a mainstay for rustic "house wine" production on the island. The Labrusca element gives Isabella an intoxicating, wild quality on the nose. António has rescued an old plot of this unique variety for this passion project.

Winemaking Notes: The Isabella is harvested by hand to small baskets. The grapes macerate for 24 hours in stainless steel tanks before being slowly pressed. The must is racked via gravity to stainless steel tanks of 600 liters and 1,000 liters. The wine ages for 12 months in tank.

Tasting Notes: Simultaneously delicate and powerful, Isabella produces an incredibly versatile wine with food-friendly acidity, a profound mineral signature, and terrific concentration. The nose shows explosive aromas of sour cherry, cranberry, beef blood and sea spray. Funky and wild on the palate, Isabella a Proibida finishes with umami-laden flavors of meat, seaweed and wet stones. Isabella’s high-toned acidity makes it a wonderful red for seafood, and its concentration gives it great versatility. Mushrooms, game and rich seafood dishes are all terrific pairings.
