Vineyard Notes: Located in the heart of Soave Classico, Monte Grande is the prized vineyard of the estate. The Prà family has owned Monte Grande for generations with much of the plantings done in the late 1970s. The vineyard is located about 500 feet above sea level. The rich volcanic soil imparts power, minerality and aromatic complexity to the wines, differing from the floral and acid-driven Soave produced from limestone-rich soil. Graziano Prà was one of the first to produce a vineyard designated Soave. His first production of Monte Grande was in 1988.
Trellis: Pergola Veronese (Garganega) and Guyot (Trebbiano)
Harvest Notes: Harvest is manual. The Trebbiano di Soave is harvested in mid-September. During the first waning moon in September, the Garganega vine shoots are cut; the Garganega grapes are left to dry for one month on the vines, which concentrates the juice and acidity. The Garganega harvest occurs in October.
Winemaking Notes: The grapes are destemmed and softly pressed. Fermentation occurs at cold temperatures in large 30-hectoliter casks made of Allier oak. The wine is then left in casks to mature for 10 months. It does not undergo malolactic fermentation. The wine matures in bottle before release.
Tasting Notes: Textural richness meets dynamic, lively acidity in this Soave. Complexity of exotic fruit and fresh yellow citrus fill the mouth along with sweet almond and vanilla. The Garganega grapes harvested at over-ripeness and the Trebbiano di Soave grapes bearing an important acidic profile guarantee great aging potential. Monte Grande pairs nicely with shellfish, fish, quiche, seafood risotto and roasted meat. Ideal served with quiche, seafood risotto and roast meat.
