2017 Vintage Notes: Vintage 2017 was one of the best in the past decade for Michigan. The temperate winter was followed by an unseasonably warm spring causing the sleeping buds to appear about a week earlier than usually expected. A spring frost on May 8th singed a few of those tender buds, but judicious pruning allowed sufficient buds to remain. Summer temperatures remained moderate, seldom getting above 80 - 85 degrees F through August, and though rainfall was lacking at times, it was sufficient. September had surprising temperatures that soared into the 90s midway through the month, rapidly building the fruit sugars while retaining the acidity. The result was intensely flavored, fully ripened grapes. The early ripening Sauvignon Blanc easily reached 23.5% sugar at harvest while the slightly later ripening Semillon was harvested at 18% sugar at harvest, moderating the wine's potential alcohol.
Winemaking Notes: The Marland Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blend was made from 8 different clones of Sauvignon Blanc originating from Bordeaux and the Loire regions, and 2 different clones of Semillon planted at the Wyncroft estate in 2014. The wine was cold fermented with VL3 yeast to complete dryness and then immediately racked off the its lees to capture freshness. It was cold stabilized over winter at 35 degrees F, then was filtered and bottled in February while still cold, capturing the freshest aromas and flavors in the young wine.
Tasting Notes: The pale, greenish-straw color of this wine illuminates the piquant fragrant aromas of grapefruit, lemon grass, lime, white peach, and a hint of green fig from the Semillon. Reminiscent of classic Pessac-Leognan, the wine is bracing with a slight refreshing spritz on the entry. Intense fresh apple and citrus flavors are carried on a silky body that crescendos to a long finish. Drink this wine with fresh asparagus risotto, English peas and crab ravioli, soft cheeses, and pasta with basil pesto.
