Cabernet Sauvignon was the first wine produced by Rombauer Vineyards when the winery was founded in 1980. Diamond Selection, first produced with the 1994 vintage, is a reserve bottling representing the best lots harvested each growing season.

Vineyard Sources: Fruit for the 2014 vintage comes from estate vineyards and top grower vineyards in St. Helena (50%), Stags Leap (20%) and Calistoga (30%) AVAs.

2014 Vintage Notes: The 2014 vintage brought a perfect growing season with warm, dry conditions that allowed the fruit to develop full, concentrated flavors. Sustainable farming practices throughout the growing season were tailored to each block with the assistance of aerial photos produced using NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) technology.

Vinification: All fruit was manually harvested and sorted in the vineyards. The grapes were carefully destemmed and optically sorted to ensure only perfect fruit made it into the wine. The wine was primarily barrel fermented to provide a richer, more textured palate. The wine was gently basket pressed before being racked to French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging. The wine matured for 16 months in 100% new French oak.

Tasting Notes: This elegantly balanced wine is deep and dark with a magenta hue. Aromas of blackberry, cassis and black cherry combine seamlessly with sweet notes of milk chocolate, vanilla and tobacco. The palate is ripe and soft, with pronounced black cherry and a hint of cocoa powder. Lush tannins and sweet, subtle oak build on the palate for a long finish.

"Blackcurrants, underbrush, ivy, blueberries and spices. Medium to full body, fresh acidity and a fruity finish. A blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot. Drink now or hold."

    Rating: 93 (8/16/2017)

Pure and rich, focused on a supple core of licorice, dark berry, light cedar, fresh earth and savory herb flavors, ending with a long, smooth finish that keeps repeating the core fruit themes. Drink now through 2033.

    Rating: 90 (12/30/2016)

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Selection is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. Supple textured and slightly softer than the Atlas Peak, with less obvious minerality but with more juicy blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, judiciously dosed with some attractive toasty oak, the wine is full-bodied, rather round, opulent, pleasurable and satisfying. The softness of the tannin and lush fruit suggest drinking it now and over the next 10-12 years.

A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot aged 16 months in new French oak, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Selection offers a pretty, perfumed, elegant style as well as surprising elegance. Blueberries, spring flowers, incense and hints of graphite all flow to a medium to full-bodied, seamless, downright pretty Cabernet Sauvignon that has light tannin and a clean finish. Drink it over the coming decade.
