The 2015 vintage’s drought and bloom issues resulted in very low yields of Syrah. Therefore, this is the current Syrah release. Comprised of estate fruit, Perfectionist is a concrete co-fermentation of whole cluster Syrah and Grenache vinified and aged for 18 months in concrete tanks. The power, tannin, and ripe focus of this wine is a direct expression of the fruit, the vines, and a ripe 2014 growing season. Blackberry, vanilla bean, and ripe blueberries pull across a lengthy finish. The quest for perfection keeps us learning, growing, and evolving.

Winemaking Notes: The vineyards are farmed organically and sustainably. Currently (as of 2017) about 80% of his wines are made from estate fruit. Sulfur is sprayed to protect against mildew. Irrigation is limited and mainly used to help the young vines stay healthy. The crop loads reflect the natural balance of the vine. The grapes are harvested at the peak of ripeness to produce wines that are rich and concentrated. In the cellar, Matt uses a healthy balance of art and science. Grapes co-ferment to achieve balance and complex flavors. Fermentation tanks are not heated or cooled as Matt let’s the wines evolve naturally. Sulfites are rarely added before bottling. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

    A blend of 72% Syrah, 23% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre, the 2014 Perfectionist has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and nose of blueberry pie and blackberry preserves over notes of chocolate box, dried herbs, menthol and star anise. Medium to full-bodied, it offers up generous black fruit and spice layers supported by ripe, rounded tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and peppery.

    A highly complex, spice-laced bouquet evokes black and blue fruit preserves, incense and Moroccan spices, and a smoky mineral quality adds lift. Stains the palate with concentrated, sharply delineated boysenberry and cassis liqueur flavors that are energized by a spine of juicy acidity. Definitely rich, but shows outstanding energy and clarity as well. Finishes sweet, velvety and extremely long, leaving notes of candied flowers and spicecake behind.
