Grenache forward every year, this wine looks to highlight a variety that is an integral part of Linne Calodo. Feminine in nature, each year this blend sees some of the best barrels of Grenache and is balanced by Syrah and Mourvedre. First made in 2001, Sticks and Stones invokes beautiful imagery of vines and soils, as well as the fighting spirit of Grenache. The 2015 vintage comes entirely from the west and north blocks of Grenache on the Linne Calodo Estate. It is fermented in concrete and stainless steel tanks with a touch of whole cluster fermentation. This vintage was aged in large format French oak puncheons and a 3,000-liter French foudre. Bright red strawberries and raspberries are complemented by chewy tannins and vibrant acidity.
Winemaking Notes: The vineyards are farmed organically and sustainably. Currently (as of 2017) about 80% of his wines are made from estate fruit. Sulfur is sprayed to protect against mildew. Irrigation is limited and mainly used to help the young vines stay healthy. The crop loads reflect the natural balance of the vine. The grapes are harvested at the peak of ripeness to produce wines that are rich and concentrated. In the cellar, Matt uses a healthy balance of art and science. Grapes co-ferment to achieve balance and complex flavors. Fermentation tanks are not heated or cooled as Matt let’s the wines evolve naturally. Sulfites are rarely added before bottling. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
