Kamen Estate Wines: Ripe Fruit, Low Yields and High Quality Sonoma Cabernet
Kamen Estate is located at elevations reaching 1,100 feet to 1,450 feet in the southwestern Mayacamas Range, on the southwestern slopes of Mount Veeder, with the Napa County line less than a quarter of a mile away. This mountainous terrain was formed by ancient volcanic activity. Four different lava flows defined the area creating soil variations so extreme, that one end of a vine row can be markedly different from the other end providing a complex range of growing conditions. With the shallow depth of soils and prevalence of rock, the vines fight for survival, creating intense, flavorful fruit. From its inception, the vineyard has been farmed using only organic methods and is officially certified as such by the State of California.
Initially, Kamen fruit was sold to premium Sonoma wineries. In 1996, a devastating fire tore through the property destroying half of the vines along with Robert's home. Where others would see this as a tremendous setback, Robert's credo, "Everything happens for a reason", held sway. The fire forced him to focus not on what had been lost, but on what could be gained. A major replanting began as soon as the ground cooled. Cutting edge viticultural techniques were employed, new selections of Cabernet clones were chosen and different rootstocks were used. The first release of Kamen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was in 1999.
