Podere Forte

Country of Origin: Italy
Location: Orcia
People: Pasquale Forte, Owner
Supplier: www.matchvino.com

The Orcia DOC in Tuscany used to exist only on paper before Pasquale Forte came to town. He decided to work toward a new identity for the region, crafting wines that would qualitatively stand just as tall as those of his more famous neighbors to the north in Montalcino.

Forte is setting new standards for his appellation. He started by researching the best grape varieties and farming methods for his 22 hectares of land. Forte has a deep, fervent belief in biodynamic farming, and makes his wines without sulfites.
Much more could be said about this estate, but the fact is that Podere Forte is always in a state of evolution. So many new ideas are being kicked around that the ordinary wine lover might get dizzy!

Recent developments include a new all gravitational flow winery, which is surrounded by the estate's amphitheater-shaped vineyards, a shape which traps heat for Sangiovese of the utmost ripeness and flavor. Soil types are mainly a mixture of chalk and clay.

Podere Forte is located just outside of Castiglione d'Orcia, an historic hilltop village of Etruscan origin, just about 10 miles south of Montalcino.

Podere Forte 2006 Petrucci DOC Orcia
Rating: 94+

The 2006 Petrucci (Sangiovese) reveals a finely-knit fabric of ripe red fruits, flowers, menthol and tobacco, all of which come together with exceptional grace and elegance in a powerful yet sublime style. The wine possesses stunning length and silky, elegant tannins that frame the fruit all the way through to the long, satisfying finish. This is a gem from Podere Forte. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2026.

Podere Forte 2006 Guardiavigna IGT
Rating: 96

The 2006 Guardavigna is even better. Here the fruit is riper, darker and richer. Blackberries, blueberries, grilled herbs, minerals and tar emerge from this dark, brooding beauty. The wine possesses gorgeous inner perfume and an utterly captivating personality. The tannins remain imposing, so a few years of cellaring are recommended, but readers lucky enough to find the Guardavigna are in for a thrilling drinking experience. Guardavigna is Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.
