Bodegas Cal Blanca Information Sheet
Country of Origin: Spain
People: Pablo Rubio, winemaker
Supplier: www.oleimports.com

Founded in 2007 as a joint venture between Juan Pablo Peñalba (Torremilanos Family), Pablo Rubio (Peter Sisseck vineyard manager for PSI in Ribera del Duero), Alberto Orte and Patrick Mata from Ole Imports.

Cal Blanca, means White Chalk on the English language. Toro, located west of Ribera del Duero is slightly warmer due to its lower elevation and alluvial (river stones/sand) soil composition. Limestone and Chalk is quite rare in Toro. In fact as an importer for the last 10 years and traveling extensible throughout the vineyards of this region, I have
never seen limestone before. Limestone and chalk retains less heat than sand or river stones; allowing the grapes to retain more acidity due to the slower ripening process of the grapes. The limestone/chalk quality of this vineyard is the most important factor in making this wine taste "cooler" than its neighbors'.

Cal Blanca undergoes Cool maceration for 3 days, and 20 days of Fermentation at cool temperatures. Oak aged in 2 year old French for 6 months followed by 3 months in 5,000 Lit in concrete tanks to provide unoaked oxygenation.

Bodegas Cal Blanca 2007 Tempranillo
Rating: 90

The opaque purple-colored 2007 Cal Blanca is 100% Tempranillo sourced from 80- to 100-year-old vines. It was aged in seasoned French oak for six months followed by three months in 5,000-liter concrete tanks to provide unoaked oxygenation. It delivers a nose of roasted mineral, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a structured wine with exceptional richness, outstanding concentration, and a lengthy finish. Drink this remarkable value over the next six years.
