Frankland Estate Information Sheet
Country of Origin: Australia
People: Barrie Smith & Judi Cullam, Owners | Elizabeth & Hunter Smith, Winemakers
Supplier: www.tapwc.com

Frankland Estate was established in 1988 by Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam who continue to be actively involved in every aspect of the vineyard and winery. They are now assisted by their daughter Elizabeth Smith, son Hunter Smith and a small, hardworking team who enjoy the diverse and idiosyncratic challenges associated with working in a family business.

The Isolation Ridge vineyard lies on part of a farm where the family have run a wool growing enterprise since 1974. The decision to diversify their farming interests was inspired and informed by a tour of French vineyards Barrie and Judi undertook in 1985 and also by two vintages they worked at Chateau Senejac in Bordeaux.

The winemaking philosophies at Frankland Estate reflect these influences as well as the hard-earned lessons gained from some 17 vintages in the Frankland River region.
The approach to winemaking is based on the principle that the most significant characteristics of a wine come from the soil and the vineyard environment. They aim to make wines that reflect nature rather than the hand of the winemaker. This is the basis of their commitment to sustainable farming and to working the land in accord with the cycles of nature. They carefully nurture the health of the soils in the vineyards and only take from their vineyards as much as can be replaced by natural processes.

Frankland Estate 2007 Riesling 'Isolation Ridge'
Rating: 90

Pale straw color. Fresh pear and apple aromas are underscored by gentle Meyer lemon and orange notes. Fleshy and forward, offering soft citrus and orchard fruit flavors and gentle mineral bite on the back. Less strict than I usually find this wine at this stage. Finishes with very good clarity and cling.

Frankland Estate 2004 'Isolation Ridge' Shiraz
Rating: 92

Distinctly peppery and full of personality, this is juicy with blackberry and savory, meaty flavors that ride under the spicy character. Lingers with hints of dark chocolate as the finish persists well. Drink now through 2016. 600 cases imported.

Frankland Estate 2007 'Isolation Ridge' Riesling
Rating: 92

The 2007 Dry Riesling Isolation Ridge Vineyard is medium straw-colored with aromas of petrol, mineral, lemon-lime, and an overall earthy character. It possesses vibrant acidity, intense flavors, and 6-8 years of aging potential. This brilliantly rendered Riesling is likely to drink well through 2027. Frankland Estate is considered by many to be the leading estate from the Frankland River GI.

Frankland Estate 2004 'Isolation Ridge' Shiraz
Rating: 92

The 2004 Shiraz Isolation Ridge Vineyard is a bright cherry red with an excellent perfume of pepper, underbrush, blueberry, and black cherry. Made in an elegant style (a very different expression than Shiraz from Barossa and McLaren Vale), it has plenty of racy, ripe red and blue fruit, excellent balance, and a pure finish. It will blossom over the next 3-5 years and offer prime drinking from 2012 to 2024. Frankland Estate is considered by many to be the leading estate from the Frankland River GI.
