Pazo de Galegos Information Sheet
Country of Origin: Spain
Location: Riax Biaxas
People: Manuel Garcia, Owner | Paul Garcia, Winemaker
Supplier: www.oleimports.com

Proprietor: Manuel García founded Pazo Galegos in 1989 owning today 25 acres (10 Ha) of vineyard of white Albariño and red Mencía grapes. His first vintage was in 1989.

Location: Zone 1, north west of Spain in the town of San Pedro de Vilanova in Galicia at 1,936 ft altitude; enclosed in the Ulla district, which is the driest district in Rias Baixas (Ree-ahss By-hahss).

Climate: Zone 1, Atlantic climate, with average temperatures from April to October of of 59º F (among the lowest temperatures in Spain) and 19.3 in. of rainfall which is among the lowest recorded rainfall levels in Rias Baixas. The cool temperatures provide a longer growing / ripening period which results in more aromatic and fresher wines. This longer growing season is only positive due to the relative low levels of rainfall which allow for healthy ripening to take place.

Soil: The topsoil is sandy with clay subsoil. The sandy soil retains heat, drains water quickly, is low in organic material and low in pH content. The main quality of its clay subsoil is water retention, which is very positive due to the warm topsoil. The cool temperatures increase freshness and aromatic expression (increased acid), supported by a soil bed that allow its grapes to ripen in a low moisture environment, with ample water-nourishment from it's water retaining subsoil. Its low organic material limits vegetative growth, thus keeping yields naturally low, resulting in more concentrated fruit flavors.

What makes Pazo Galego unique? Fermented with the natural yeast of its own grapes. Pazo Galego is a distinct Albariño revealing the virtues of its unique terroir. Low yielding vines fashioning expressive / concentrated grapes. Pazo Galego undergoes only partial malolactic fermentation to achieve greater freshness and aromatic expression.

Pazo de Galegos 2008 Albarino
Rating: 89

The 2008 Pazo de Galegos Albarino is medium straw-colored with a fragrant bouquet of mineral and lemon curd. Vibrant, concentrated, and well-balanced, it should drink well for another two years.

Pazo de Galegos 2007 Albarino
Rating: 90

The Pazo de Galegos estate is located in the interior of Riax Biaxas (most producers are on the coast) giving more consistent weather. The 2007 Albarino was sourced from 26-year-old-vines and raised in stainless steel with partial malolactic fermentation. Light gold-colored, it has an attractive perfume of lemon, orange peel, and mineral. Creamy, round, and balanced, it has very good acidity and a long, crisp finish.
