Ladera Sagrada Information Sheet
Country of Origin: Spain
Location: Valdeorras
People: Jose Luis Murcia Sotos
Supplier: www.oleimports.com

The Ladera Sagrada winery of the Valdeorras D.O. was founded in 1920. Jose L. Sotos is the majority owner and the winemaker. The estate owned vineyards grow two varietals, Godello and Mencia. Some Godello vines are over 40 years old, the oldest in Valdeorras. The Papa Godello sees no oak and there is no malolactic fermentation, achieving greater aromatic expression and freshness. Papa Godello uses its own naturally occurring yeasts, adding to the wine's great terroir driven characteristics.

The winery is located in the autonomous region of Galicia in far northwestern 'Celtic'Spain. Within the Valdeorras DO in the Valdeorras district in the mountain town of Larouco.

The soil is composed of slate and granite topsoil, with a thin clay subsoil. This soil profile is poor in organic matter yielding 6 pounds of grapes per vine, compared to the average of 17 pounds per vine in Valdeorras. The granite and slate soil surface warms up during the day, providing heat to the roots, encouraging the grapes to continue ripening even during the cool nights. Lower yields result in more concentrated grapes providing more flavor intensity to the wines.

Ladera Sagrada 2008 Castelo do Papa (Godello)
Rating: 90

The 2008 Castelo de Papa is 100% Godello from estate-owned vineyards fermented with native yeasts and raised in stainless steel. Medium straw-colored with plenty of glycerin oozing down the glass, it reveals an alluring nose of mineral/slate, white peach, lime and melon. Crisp and vibrant on the palate, it has exceptional volume in the mouth and a long, fruit finish.
