Bodegas Vizcarra Ramos was founded by Juan Carlos Vizcarra in 1991. They own 64-acres (26 hectares) of vineyards in the town of Mambrilla and Roa in Burgos.

In town of Mambrilla, at an altitude of 2785 ft. Lying within the eastern sub-region of the Ribera del Duero DO (Zone #2), in Burgos province in Castilla.

The average temperature between April and October is 60.5F, with an annual rainfall level of 18.9 inches. The Ribera del Duero's (Burgos) eastern sub-region has a cooler climate than Rueda or Toro, due to its higher altitude. The wines produced here are usually darker, more concentrated and aromatic than wines made in the western part of Ribera del Duero. A continental climate with cool nights and hot days with moderately low rainfall, provides a longer ripening period, resulting in greater complexity and the evident expressive aromatic intensity. Vizcarra Ramos 2007 Tempranillo 'J.C. Vizcarra'
Rating: 92

(2008 Vintage) The 2008 J.C. Vizcarra, from a moderately challenging vintage, was the recipient of all the juice that would have gone into the estate’s upper-tier wines. It is 100% Tempranillo aged for 15 months in 50% new French and American oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it displays an expressive bouquet of pain grille, pencil lead, Asian spices, lavender, and blackberry. Ripe, succulent, and structured, it has 2-3 years of aging potential and will provide prime drinking from 2012 to 2020. It is a great value in serious red wine.

Vizcarra Ramos 2008 Tempranillo 'Roble'
Rating: 90

(2009 Vintage) Bodegas Vizcarra Ramos's 2009 Roble is 100% Tempranillo aged for 7 months in seasoned French and American oak. Purple-colored, it gives up a first-class perfume of mineral, Asian spices, violets, and lightly roasted black fruits. This is followed by a succulent, full-flavored, voluminous wine with excellent balance and a long, fruit-filled finish. It is an outstanding value that over-delivers in a big way as well as a sneak preview of just how good the top wines from Ribera del Duero will be when released 2-3 years from now.

Vizcarra Ramos 2007 Tempranillo 'J.C. Vizcarra'
Rating: 89

The 2007 J.C. Vizcarra spent nine months in French and American oak. Purple-colored, it gives up a splendid bouquet of cedar, scorched earth, espresso, incense, and blackberry. Layered on the palate with plenty of ripe tannin, this dense, packed effort will evolve for 3-5 years and drink well through 2025. If I were young, a bit short on discretionary funds, and wanting to start a cellar, this is the type of wine I'd be looking to buy.

Vizcarra Ramos 2008 Tempranillo 'Roble'
Rating: 88

Bright ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of raspberry, orange peel and cinnamon. Pure and gently sweet, with sappy red berry flavors and a suave candied rose quality. A bit firm-edged on the finish, with the orange and cinnamon notes repeating. This is complex enough to enjoy now.

Inky purple. An expansive bouquet offers scents of blueberry, cola, violet and smoky minerals. Fresh dark berry flavors display impressive depth and are brightened by notes of fresh flowers and mace. Finishes with excellent clarity and assertive lingering flavors of blue fruits and cherry compote.

Vizcarra Ramos 2007 Roble (Tempranillo)
Rating: 87

The entry level 2007 Vizcarra Roble has turned out well. Made from 100% Tempranillo (as are all the Vizcarra Ramos wines), it spent six months in French oak. Deep purple-colored, it has a fragrant nose of mineral, earth notes, and blackberry. On the palate it is tasty if a bit one-dimensional. Ripe and well balanced, it is a good value for a wine from Ribera del Duero.

Vizcarra Ramos 2005 Ines (Tempranillo)
Rating: 93

The 2005 Ines Vizcarra spent 15 months in 500-liter French oak. It reveals a complex aromatic array of pain grille, violets, tobacco, leather, spice box and blackberry liqueur. This leads to a full-bodied, opulent yet elegant wine with gobs of sweet fruit, superior depth, and a very long finish. This nicely balanced wine will evolve for 3-5 years and will provide pleasure through 2030.

Vizcarra Ramos 2005 Celia (Tempranillo)
Rating: 95

The 2005 Cecila (named after one of the proprietor's daughters) is a limited production cuvee. The 2005 Celia Vizcarra spent 18 months in 500-liter French oak. Deeper in color and a bit more fragrant, its superb aromatics are followed by an intense, layered, plush wine with tons of spicy fruit, hidden tannin, and 6-8 years of cellaring potential. This top-notch effort will be at its finest between 2015 and 2035.
