Vinos Pinol Information Sheet
Country of Origin: Spain
Location: Batea
People: Josefina & Juanjo Pinol, Owners | Juanjo Galcera Pinol, Winemaker
Supplier: www.oleimports.com

Since its inception, in 1945 by Josep Arrufi, making small quantities of well-crafted wines with passion, love and respect for the land and the vines is what Celler Vinos Pinol is all about. This tradition continues to this day with Josefina Pinol and her son, winemaker Juanjo Galcera Pinol, the 4th generation at the helm. Celler Vinos Pinol owns 100 acres of carefully tended vines, in and around the medieval town of Batea, in the Terra Alta district of the Tarragona province.

Located a few miles south and west of Priorat, within the Terra Alta DO in Catalunya's Tarragona province in northeastern Spain. The winemaking tradition, in this remote region, dates back to the 13th century. The winery and vineyards are in Batea, which lies at 1168ft in altitude.

What makes Vinos Pinol unique? Small production wines from low yielding older vines using ecologically friendly methods and manual harvesting in the estate's organically grown vineyards. Producing terroir driven, deeply colored, well-structured, well-balanced wines. Family owned estate vineyards. Consistent quality year after year. Talented young winemaker Juanjo Galcera Pinol's blending philosophy.

Vinos Pinol (500 ml) 2006 Garnacha/Syrah (Dulce)
Rating: 92

The 2006 Josefina Pinol Red Dulce was produced from 90% Garnacha (over 100 years of age) and 10% Syrah and aged for 5 months in seasoned oak. It reveals aromas of earth, mineral, and black cherry with flavors of assorted black fruits and prunes. On the palate it is intense, medium sweet, and lengthy. Drink this late harvest wine over the next 2-3 years.

Vinos Pinol (500 ml) 2007 White Garnacha (Dulce)
Rating: 91

The 2007 Josefina Pinol White Dulce was produced from late-harvested 50-year-old White Garnacha and fortified by an additional 3%. It was aged for 4 months in seasoned oak. The result is a medium sweet wine with aromas and flavors of orange marmalade. It has good acidity and balance and should pair well with fruit desserts. Drink this late harvest wine over the next 2-3 years.

Vinos Pinol (500 ml) 2008 White Garnacha (Dulce)
Rating: 90

Light amber-orange. Dried flowers, peach and orange marmalade on the nose, with suave floral and herbal notes adding complexity. Very fresh and energetic for a sweet wine, offering sappy citrus and pit fruit flavors and good back-end lift. The finish repeats the herbal note and lingers with very good persistence and mounting sweetness.

Vinos Pinol 2006 Sacra Natura (Organic)
Rating: 90

At the higher end of the portfolio, the 2006 Sacra Natura is certified organic. It is composed of 35% Carinena, 20% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, and 10% Tempranillo aged for 6 months in French, American, and Hungarian oak. Purple-colored, it offers up an enticing nose of cedar, tobacco, pencil lead, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to a medium to full-bodied, layered wine with complex flavors, gobs of ripe fruit, and 2-3 years of aging potential. Drink this outstanding value in organic wine over the next 6-8 years.
