Country of Origin: USA
Location: Monterey
People: Talbott Family, Owners | Dan Karlsen, Winemaker & Asst. Winemaker, Rolando Michel

Robert Talbott Vineyards is the story of one family's commitment to strict standards of excellence, belief in the value of hard work, recognition of the wisdom of simplicity, and devotion to the family as life's center. For nearly a quarter century, the Talbott family has built its reputation on the belief that in order to excel, you must focus on doing one thing right, with absolute commitment to excellence. This conviction led Talbott to produce only Chardonnay and pinot noir from its estate vineyards in Monterey County. Crafted using grapes from two of the region's most esteemed vineyard areas: the Santa Lucia Highlands, where Talbott's Sleepy Hollow and River Road Vineyards are located, and the Carmel Valley, home to Talbott's prestigious Diamond T Vineyard, Talbott wines have earned a reputation for elegance and aging potential. Using traditional, age-old methods, they produce Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that exhibit the finest possible expression of the grapes grown in their carefully managed vineyards. They celebrate and foster their own unique style, and temporary fads or trends never impair their vision. The wines are a testimony to the earth upon which they are grown, and the Talbott's protect and preserve the natural abundance of that earth. They plant and nurture the grape varieties they love and make their wines with a passion grown out of that love.

Dan took over for Sam Balderas, who retired in March 2008. Lovers of great Chardonnay and Pinot Noir will likely know Dan by reputation. A gifted winemaker with more than three decades of experience, Dan began his career in 1980 at Dry Creek Vineyard. Throughout the '80s and '90s, he honed his skills making Chardonnay and Pinot Noir working at Dehlinger Winery, and later as the winemaker for Domaine Carneros. In 1998, Dan became the winemaker and general manager for Chalone Winery, where he worked until 2007.

Talbott 2008 Pinot Noir, Kali Hart, Monterey
Rating: 88

The 2008 Pinot Noir Kali Hart has a medium ruby color and a big, smoky, spicy nose with plenty of mulberry and black cherry fruit. Almost Burgundian in its aromatics, the wine is medium-bodied, pure, and nicely textured. This is a delicious, well-made Pinot Noir to drink over the next 2-4 years. This is the most impressive lineup of wines I have seen from Talbott in a number of years. Their less expensive second label is a noteworthy value.

Talbott 2008 Pinot Noir 'Logan'
Rating: 92

The 2008 Pinot Noir Logan has wild berry and sandalwood notes, a slightly darker ruby color, richer, more dramatic flavors of red and blue fruits, and some nice spice and earth. This beauty is broad, savory, and can be drunk now or cellared for another 7-8 years.

- The Wine Advocate (8/31/2010)

Talbott 2008 Pinot Noir, Sleepy Hollow
Rating: 90+

The 2008 Pinot Noir Sleepy Hollow Vineyard has a similar dark ruby color as well as an attractively perfumed nose of red and blue fruits, spice box, and a touch of earth and background wood. It is rich, textured, and slightly more structured than the Logan (or at least the tannins appear more present). It's a beauty as well.

Talbott 2007 Pinot Noir, Kali Hart, Monterey
Rating: 88

A relatively high-toned nose of raspberry and cranberry merges into nicely detailed, fresh and vibrant light to middle weight flavors that possess good underlying tension and I like the underlying sense of balance and no obvious finishing warmth. This is not especially complex but the price is more than reasonable in today's market.

Talbott 2007 Chardonnay 'Logan'
Rating: 87

(2008 Vintage) Offering a mix of spicy pear, melon, light cedary oak, this is full-bodied, a bit raw and coarse, but retains its complexity. Drink now through 2014.

- The Wine Spectator (7/31/2010)

Talbott 2006 Chardonnay, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard
Rating: 90

A very distinctive style. Full-bodied and well-done, rich and unctuous, showing bold, fleshy ripe fig, honey, melon and spicy hazelnut flavors, with light oak shadings. Ends with a long, honeyed finish. Drink now through 2014.

Talbott 2007 Chardonnay 'Logan', SHV
Rating: 89

Hard clove, cedar, ripe pear and apple flavors are pure, focused, intense and concentrated, gaining depth and richness on the finish. Drink now through 2012. 6,300 cases made.

Talbott 2005 Chardonnay, Cuvee Audrey, Monterey
Rating: 92

"Vivid gold color. Explosively perfumed nose offers a sexy bouquet of tangerine, nectarine, buttered toast, mace and floral honey. Smoky pit fruit flavors are braced by zesty citrus and mineral qualities, picking up sweeter melon and poached pear on the back end, in addition to a smoky, leesy note. I like this wine's balance of energy and power, and the finish clings tenaciously." - Josh Raynolds

- International Wine Cellar (11/1/2008)

Talbott 2005 Chardonnay 'Cuvee Carlotta'
Rating: 91

"Bright yellow-gold. Meyer lemon, guava, white peach, buttery brioche and baking spices on the nose. Densely packed exotic fruit flavors are complicated by sweet butter, floral honey and cinnamon. Gains weight with air while retaining focus, finishing broad and spicy. This is in serious need of rich food.” - Josh Raynolds

- International Wine Cellar (11/1/2008)

Talbott 2005 Diamond T Chardonnay
Rating: 91

“Bright gold. Sexy, oak-spiced pear and melon aromas are complicated by vanilla bean and blond tobacco. Lush and creamy, with poached pear and honeydew flavors and an undertone of smoky baking spices. A bitter peach pit note adds bite to the long, sappy finish. This is already very inviting.” - Josh Raynolds

- International Wine Cellar (11/1/2008)

Talbott 2003 Chardonnay, Diamond T Estate
Rating: 88

A rich, honeyed style, with fig, apricot and a hint of anise. Smooth-textured, with a long persistent finish that keeps repeating the honeyed themes. Drink now. 550 cases made.

- The Wine Spectator (4/30/2008)

Robert Talbott Vineyards 2004 Chardonnay, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard

Lovely pineapple, lemon curd and peach flavors veer toward ripe and candied, with pretty oak shadings and juicy acidity.
