Country of Origin: Spain
Location: Mota del Cuervo, La Mancha
People: Samuel Cano, Owner & Winemaker
Viticulture: Certified Organic
Samuel Cano and his family, for more than 4 generations, have been dedicated to agriculture: garlic, potatoes and, of course, the vineyard (the garlic and potatoes grow between the vines!). It was only in 2006 that Samuel decided to make wine. Under the name Vinos Patio, Samuel crafts wines that are every bit as reflective of this land. Rustic, charming, playful yet stern, his craft is a vinous window into this side of the Spanish countryside, some of the wildest on the Iberian Peninsula.
The Cano family has vines in Mota del Cuervo and surrounding villages, which total about 35 hectares distributed among 40 plots with with altitudes from 700 to 850 meters above sea level. Airén is the main variety planted (17 hectares); the remaining plots grow Tempranillo, Syrah, Petit Verdo, Tinto Velasco, Muscatel, Vigiriega and Graciano. They keep about 5 hectares of the land for their wine production and sell the rest of the grapes to other wineries. The vineyards are certified organic by SOHISCERT, and only a small amount of irrigation is done to control the water stress of the region.
Samuel does not use any additives in the cellar nor temperature control. Each variety is vinified separately with indigenous yeast. Fermentation vessels include large Spanish chestnut barrels, Spanish oak barrels and stainless steel. These are naturally made Spanish wines with soul.
