Laberinto is a small gravity fed winery owned by Rafael Tirado and his family in Colbun. Colbun is an eastern mountainous region located within the Maule Valley. It is inserted in the foothills of the Andes, about three hours south of Santiago. The property was a summer resort for the family even before the waters of the Maule River were retained in 1985, which formed the largest lake in the central part of the country.

Rafael Tirado planted the first vines in 1993: half a hectare of Cabernet Sauvignon. Today the winery cultivates five separate sections totaling 18 hectares of vineyards within their 80-hectare property. His vineyards are legally recognized to be located within the Colbun DO and currently is the only estate producer in the DO. The soils are composed of granite and volcanic ash, and the vineyards are located at approximately 1,800 feet altitude. One of the vineyards is planted in the shape of a circular labyrinth (laberinto in Spanish). The winery produces stunning expressions of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and a Bordeaux blend.

Reviews

  • Laberinto 2022 'Cenizas' Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Colbun
    The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 95 (4/6/2023)

The 2022 Cenizas de Laberinto Sauvignon Blanc is sharp and vibrant, with 12.6% alcohol, a pH of 3.04 and 8.77 grams of acidity. It was produced with grapes from vines planted in 1993 on volcanic ash soils. In 2022, Tirado macerated a bit more, looking for a little more structure. The wine didn't go through malolactic and was bottled after eight months with lees. This is sharp as a knife, with subtle aromas of meat broth and savory rather than floral or exotic, less varietal, complex, austere and mineral, with a rocky sensation. It's textured and tasty, clean, long and nuanced, fresh and balanced, with the cool sensation of the cold nights. He's worked a lot through decantation to be able to bottle the wine unfiltered, and the wine is bright and clean. It's an amazing wine, one of the finest values in Chile.

It was bottled in November 2022. Experience with older vintages tells me this wine is going to develop nicely in bottle.
  • Laberinto 2019 'Cenizas' Mezcla Tinta (Red Blend), Colbun
    The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 92+ (4/6/2023)

The 2019 Cenizas de Laberinto Mezcla Tinta, cropped from a cold year in the zone, was produced with a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, fermented in concrete and matured in 400-liter French oak barrels for 12 months. It has 14% alcohol and retained good freshness and acidity. It's very austere and Bordeaux-like, a cool-climate red, with better integrated oak. Tirado has abandoned 225-liter barrels, and the wines feel younger and livelier. 8,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2021.
